Food and its importance in religion topic of Puff Lecture

Daniel Sack will give the annual Puff Lecture at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, in 111 Harrison Hall. Sack will speak on "Eating at the Table of the Gods."

Sack is the author of Whitebread Protestants: Food and Religion in American Culture, published by St. Martin’s Press. It is described in Christianity Today as "a delightful romp through the foodways of American Protestantism."

"We can learn more from Protestant church meals than just a good Jell-O salad recipe," says Sack. "Church meals both reflect and shape the structure of the world."

Sack is program officer for Associated Colleges of the Midwest, where he administers off-campus study and faculty development programs for 14 liberal arts colleges. He received a doctorate in religion from Princeton University in 1995. He has taught at Hope College and was associate director of the Material History of American Religion project from 1995-2001. The project was based at Vanderbilt Divinity School and funded by the Lilly Endowment.

Sack has published widely and his second book, Moral Re-Armament, is due for a 2003 release.

Miami’s department of comparative religion is sponsor of the free talk. The Edward A. Puff Sr. and Edith Kottmyer Puff Memorial Lecture in the Study of Christianity was established by the Rev. Edward A. Puff Jr., a Dayton clergyman, and his brother, Harold F. Puff of Oxford, professor of management emeritus at Miami. It is named for their parents in gratitude for the sacrifices they made that enabled the brothers to attend Miami during the Depression years.
