Record response to MUM’s Fantastic Fridays

Miami Middletown’s Fantastic Free Fridays Series is experiencing record audiences, filling Dave Finkelman Auditorium and requiring additional performances this season.

The program, sponsored by the Miami Middletown Artist and Lecture Series, is in its second year. Preschool through high-school students from Dayton to Cincinnati and all areas in between mix with college students at the performances. "Our audiences are an interesting mix of generations ranging in age from 3 to 83," says Rod Nimtz (Miami Middletown), coordinator of the Artist and Lecture Series.

"For future teachers it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience different types of music and drama and to see how young students react to live performances," says Susan Joyce (music), coordinator with Nimtz of the program. Teachers are provided with materials so they can prepare students for what they are going to see and hear, and the artists explain to the audience what they are doing or something about the piece they are going to perform, Joyce says.

Selections from the opera "Hansel and Gretel" performed by Miami’s Opera Theatre are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9. The 10 a.m. performance is filled, but seats are available for the general public for the 12:30 p.m. performance.

Future Fantastic Free Fridays performances include "Dr. King’s Dream" Feb. 22 and Miami’s Global Rhythms Ensemble March 29.
