Miami in Top 10 in study abroad

Miami ranks 10th in the nation in the number of students who study abroad.

A total of 1,155 Miami students received academic credit for international study programs in 1999-2000, according to an annual report released this month by the Institute of International Education.

Miami has ranked in the top 10 nationally in the last six surveys and ranks first among doctoral/non-research universities for the fourth time.

Nine research institutions, Brigham Young (1,967), Penn State (1,743), Michigan State (1,674), University of Texas (1,619), New York University (1,471), University of Illinois (1,337), University of Wisconsin (1,297), University of North Carolina (1,217) and University of Pennsylvania (1,196) sent more students abroad than Miami.

International education is even more important in the aftermath of Sept. 11, according to IIE officials. "Terrorists wish to close our minds, our borders and our markets to the rest of the world, and we must make sure they do not succeed," said Allen E. Goodman, IIE president.

Miami students and their families seem to agree.

"Students appear to be as interested as ever in international opportunities based on the number of appointments for myself and for the coordinator of the Luxembourg program," says Marcia Waller, Miami’s study abroad adviser. She has seen no drop in applications to study abroad programs.

Two other Ohio colleges ranked in the top 20 in their institutional categories. They included Ohio State (1,106 students, 12th highest for research institutions) and the University of Dayton (348 students, 14th highest for master’s institutions).

According to the IIE report, a total of 143,590 American students were involved in study abroad programs with the top five destinations being Britain, Spain, Italy, France and Mexico.
