Hampton awards announced

A total of $27,175 has been awarded to faculty from the Philip and Elaina Hampton Fund for Faculty International Initiatives.

Fall competition awardees, their projects and the amount of their awards follow:

William Albin (music), "Bali and Beyond: Bringing Gamelan from the Village into the Classroom (Indonesia)," $5,005;

Howard Blanning (theatre), "International Workshops on Structural Dramaturgy and Playwriting," $2,450;

Michelle Briscoe (political science), "Comparing the Use of Affirmative Action Policies for University Faculty: Theoretical Perspectives and Realistic Outcomes — the Cases of the U.S. and South Africa," $5,250;

Hailiang Dong (geology), "Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project: A Unique Opportunity for Studying the Deep Subsurface Microbiology," $3,900;

Carolyn Hall Mason (nursing), "Furthering the Gambia/Miami Relationship," $2,500;

Abdoulaye Saine (political science), "The Military, Democracy and Democratization in the Gambia: An Evaluation of Regime Performance, 1994-2001," $4,320;

Elisabeth Widom (geology), "Trace Element and Isotopic Constraints on the Chemical and Temporal Evolution of a Complex Magmatic System: the 1707 Eruption of Fuji Volcano, Japan," $3,750.

Deadline for proposals for the spring competition is March 15.
