Miami students shine in media campaign

Sixteen Miami students are featured in a multimedia campaign designed to encourage minority students to enroll at Miami.

Selected to participate in the "I Am Miami" campaign from more than 80 volunteers were Marcina Albert (Dayton), Samantha Baldridge (Flossmoor, Ill.), Audra Bradfield (Cleveland), Cinamon Butler (Cincinnati), Jason Byrd (Cincinnati), Greg Evans (Cincinnati), Shaohong Fang (Toledo), De’Leon Johnson (Columbus), Tanika Harbor (Detroit), Kirsten Higgins (San Carlos, Calif.), Maximillian Howell (Olathe, Kan.), Myron Lee (Detroit), Gayan Poovendran (Marion, Ind.), Jarrett Smith (Barrington, Ill.), Nate Smith (Bedford) and Maryann Wu (Canton).

The campaign, which includes television and newspaper ads, radio spots, a Web site and billboards, is targeted at Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Detroit.

Since its inception three years ago, the "I Am Miami" campaign has featured real Miami students of color talking about their experiences on campus. The campaign has been credited with helping Miami increase the number of its minority students.

Minority applications jumped 28 percent the first year after its inception. This fall, almost 10 percent of the freshman class consists of students of color.

Myrtis Powell, vice president for student affairs, said the university was eager to let students of color and their families know that Miami has the highest graduation rate for African-American students of any public university in Ohio and that more than 86 percent of minority freshmen return for their sophomore year.

"Miami is not a revolving door. Students of color who come here succeed," said Powell.
