$10,000 art competition exhibition at Hiestand Galleries
Paintings by finalists in Miami’s third Young Painters’ Competition are on exhibition at the Hiestand Galleries, School of Fine Arts through Feb. 5.
Finalists were selected from slides of 1,090 works submitted by 218 artists representing 48 states. The winning painter, to be announced at a reception 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, will receive the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award.
Yeck, of Dayton, is a 1936 Miami graduate who established the competition to give the university national visibility and to benefit Miami’s visual arts students. The Yecks also established Miami’s Outdoor Sculpture Competition.
Works by last year’s winner, Tara Giannini, will be exhibited at Hiestand Galleries Jan. 8-31.
Juror for this year’s competition is James T. Demetrion (Miami ’52), director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He will be on campus for the award ceremony and to speak about the exhibition.
A second prize of $1,500 and third prize of $1,000 will be awarded, as well as a $500 award in a "student choice" category. Miami students who view the exhibition are encouraged to vote for their favorite painting. All students who vote will be entered into a random drawing to win a free trip for two to New York.
