African-American literature expert/distinguished alumna to speak

Frances Smith Foster (Miami ’63), the Charles Howard Candler Professor of English and Women’s Studies and director of the Institute of Women’s Studies at Emory University, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the Miami University Art Museum.

Her talk is titled "Oprah’s Book Club: Ancestors and Siblings."

Foster is the author of Witnessing Slavery and Written by Herself.

She has also edited — and so made available to readers of African-American literature — Harriet Jacob’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, as well as other works.

She is editor of the Norton Anthology of African American Literature and The Oxford Companion to African American Literature.
