Eleven-time Grammy Award-winner Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder will team up with The Whites and Skaggs' musically gifted family to perform sacred and non-sacred holiday standards at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in Millett Hall.
The concert is sponsored by Miami's Performing Arts Series. Special to this concert is a $5 ticket discount offered to all Miami employees.
Born in Cordell, Ky., Skaggs was an accomplished singer and mandolin player by the time he reached his teens. He played with bluegrass patriarch Ralph Stanley in the '70s, received the Country Music Association's "Entertainer of the Year" award in 1985 and in the late '90s established his own record label, Skaggs Family Records.
Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder have received numerous Grammy awards and in September were named instrumental group of the year for the eighth consecutive time by the International Bluegrass Music Association. The Skaggs Family Records' release, "Celebration of Life: Musicians Against Childhood Cancer" also was honored, receiving the IBMA album of the year award.
"A Skaggs Family Christmas, featuring Ricky Skaggs and The Whites" at Miami is also funded, in part, by the Ohio Arts Council.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $29 for senior citizens and $15 for students and youth. To receive the faculty/staff discount, present a Miami I.D. at the box office when purchasing tickets or call to order and give your unique I.D. For more information, call the box office at 9-3200.
