High school jazz festival

The 24th Southwestern Ohio High School Jazz Festival will be held Sunday, April 7, in the Center for Performing Arts. This year’s program, which will feature three internationally recognized jazz artists, will focus on "straight ahead swing," says James Olcott (music), the event’s coordinator.

Drummer Harold Jones, trombonist Rick Simerly and pianist Phil DeGreg are the highlighted guests for the annual one-day event. All three have played worldwide and have won international recognition for their prowess as jazz performers.

Joining them will be regional sensation James Bunte and Miami percussion specialists Chris Tanner and William Albin.

Beginning just after 1 p.m., 10 high-school bands from as far away as Celina and Springfield are slated to perform, each for a 20-minute period. Each group will then receive critique and instruction from one of the guest artists. Also on the agenda are master classes given by Jones and Simerly on various aspects of big band jazz performance.

Olcott will also be conducting the 1:00 Jazz Ensemble in the evening concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gates-Abegglen Theatre, Center for Performing Arts.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 9-3014.
