Health professional to receive Distinguished Achievement Award
Marilyn Hughes Gaston ’60 will be honored with the alumni association’s Distinguished Achievement Medal, presented to a graduate who has reached the pinnacle in his or her chosen field. Recently retired as associate administrator, Bureau of Primary Health Care, Health Resources and Services Administration, and Rear Admiral, U.S. Public Health Service, Gaston has dedicated her career to improving the nation’s health, focusing on poor and minority families.
Gaston is internationally recognized for her leadership in sickle cell disease. Through her work at the National Institutes of Health, she has helped reduce the mortality rate for young children with this disease.
Her other areas of interest are improving access to quality care and elimination of health disparities for vulnerable people, African-American women’s health and the health needs of youth.
Gaston is a recipient of the Living Legend Award presented by the National Medical Association and the Scroll of Merit from the National Medical Association, among many other honors.
