Miami University Press poet to give reading Nov. 7

Award-winning poet and critic Jeffrey Skinner will give a public poetry reading at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in 101 Bachelor Hall.

Skinner is the co-editor of five non-fiction books, including Passing the Word: Writers on Their Mentors (2001) and The Breath of Parted Lips: Voices from the Robert Frost Place (2000). He is the author of four books of poems, including A Guide to Forgetting (1999), which was a winner in the National Poetry Series; Late Stars (1994); and The Company of Heaven (1992).

Earlier this year Miami University Press published Gender Studies. Reviewing Gender Studies in the July 2002 issue of The Yale Review, critic Stephen Burt wrote: "Skinner’s skills … mark the poet’s successful poems as things made by this writer and no other. And yet those skills also let him make poems that feel and sound as different from one another as anger from peace, or December from June."

Skinner was the 1997 Frost House Poet-in-Residence, and this year he is the James Merrill House Poet-in-Residence. He lives with his wife, the poet Sarah Gorham, and their two teenage daughters, in Louisville, Ky.

Skinner’s reading is sponsored by the English department and Miami University Press.
