Career Fair employers surveyed

Employers surveyed at Miami’s annual fall career fair say motivation and drive are essential for this year’s graduates seeking to enter the job market.

Miami’s career planning and placement office queried nearly 170 organizations that came to interview students last month. Their responses:

• Communication skills remain the most desired quality in candidates, while motivation and drive have moved into second place. Good grades and academic ability are the third most desirable trait and leadership qualities are a close fourth.

• 34 percent of employers anticipate a greater number of entry-level hires this coming year. Fourteen percent anticipate fewer hires.

• 66 percent of the participants recruit at less than 10 schools annually. While 13 percent anticipate going to more schools this year, 19 percent will be going to fewer.

Their advise for students: Be more focused on goals and more prepared than ever in interviews.

Student participation was at its greatest level to date. More than 2,500 students attended the Sept. 17 career fair.
