Philosopher/children’s author to give Harris Lecture
Claudia Mills, assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will give the Harris Lecture, sponsored by Miami’s philosophy department, at 7 p.m. today (Nov. 7) in 12 Harrison Hall. Her topic will be "Duties to Aging Parents."
Prior to teaching philosophy, Mills spent almost a decade as director of publications for the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy at the University of Maryland.
She writes on a wide range of topics in ethical theory, social and political philosophy and applied ethics, as well as on philosophical issues and themes in children’s literature. She is editor or co-editor of Values and Public Policy; The Moral Foundations of Civil Rights; Maryland Studies in Public Policy; and Liberalism Reconsidered, Maryland Studies in Public Philosophy.
Her current research interests are focused on ethical issues in children’s literature and ethical issues in parenting/child-rearing. In addition to her philosophical writings, she is also the author of more than 30 children’s books, including Standing Up to Mr. O; Losers, Inc.; Dinah Forever; After Fifth Grade, the World!; Hannah on Her Way; and Lizzie at Last.
With the support of Miami’s College of Arts and Science, Mills will also talk to the fourth- and fifth-grade students at Stewart Elementary School Nov. 8.
