Miami takes first at debate tournament

Miami took first place honors at a major national debate tournament held at Wayne State University Nov. 1-4.

Miami’s debate team of Lincoln Bisbee and Sarah Spring finished first after completing 11 rounds of debate concerning international treaties on arms control, global warming and criminal justice. Bisbee was also rated by judges as the top speaker for the tournament.

In taking first in the varsity division, Bisbee and Spring defeated debate teams from Texas, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and other states.

Miami fielded two other teams in the tournament: James Cargo and Austin Lemker debated in the junior varsity division while Stephen Solomon and Tim Glass debated in the varsity division. Cargo was selected as the number two speaker in the junior varsity division and lost on a 2-1 decision in the semifinals to the University of Michigan- Dearborn.

Teams were coached by Ben Voth, director of forensics, and graduate coaching assistants Richard Tews and Laurelie Wallace.
