$10,000 art competition exhibition opens Dec. 18

Paintings by finalists in Miami’s fourth Young Painters Competition will be exhibited at the Hiestand Galleries, School of Fine Arts, Dec. 18-Feb. 3.

Finalists were selected from slides of 853 works submitted by 167 artists representing 40 states. The winning painter, to be announced at a reception 4-5:30 p.m. Jan. 17, will receive the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award.

Yeck, of Dayton, is a 1936 Miami graduate who established the competition to give the university national visibility and to benefit Miami’s visual arts students. The Yecks also established Miami’s Outdoor Sculpture competition.

Works by last year’s winner, Jared Joslin, will be featured at the Hiestand Dec. 17-Jan. 31 in an exhibition titled "Passage."

Two works from each of the 10 finalists will be exhibited. Finalists are: Scott Anderson, Chicago; Orit Ben-Shitrit, Long Island City, N.Y.; Barbara Campbell, Bellefonte, Pa.; Hyoungsun Chang, Chicago; Kenny Henson, Cincinnati; Hiroshi Kumagai, Jersey City, N.J.; Anne Lopez, Pittsburgh; Roberta Melzl, Jersey City, N.J.; Nola Romano, New York; and Casey Vogt, Akron.

Juror for this year’s competition is Barry Blinderman, director of university galleries at Illinois State University. Blinderman will be on campus for the award ceremony and to deliver a critical discussion of the exhibition.

A second prize of $1,500 and third prize of $1,000 will be awarded, as well as a $500 award in a "student choice" category. Miami students who view the exhibition are encouraged to vote for their favorite painting. All students who vote will be entered into a random drawing to win a free trip for two to New York.
