John Hughes appointed dean of Graduate School

John Hughes, associate dean of the College of Arts and Science, has been appointed associate provost for research and dean of the Graduate School.

Hughes began his teaching career at Miami in 1981 after receiving a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College. A professor of geology, he chaired the geology department from 1992-1999, before
being named interim associate dean.

His research interests include mineralogy, crystallography and crystal chemistry, X-ray diffractometry, geologic education and education for disabled students. He has received extensive extramural funding for his research, including recent grants from the National Science Foundation and the Ohio Board of Regents.

A fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America, Hughes was associate editor of The Canadian Mineralogist, 1996-98 and 1999-2001, and of American Mineralogist, 1990-93.

"This is an important appointment for Miami," said Ronald Crutcher, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. With Miami’s 10 doctoral and 50 master’s programs, "it is imperative we continue to offer strong (graduate) programs and consider new ones."

In his new role, Hughes will have primary responsibility for the operations of the combined offices of the Graduate School and the office for the advancement of research and scholarship (the new name of the office for the advancement of scholarship and teaching, effective Jan. 1). He is expected to start the position Jan. 1.
