Andrew awards used for primatology research

Seniors Sabrina Bourgeois and Lauren Sarringhaus are the recipients of the eighth Rebecca Jeanne Andrew Memorial Awards.

Bourgeois, an anthropology and psychology double major with a minor in applied ethics, was awarded $800 for a yearlong project on the characterization and psychological assessment of laboratory chimpanzees designated for retirement at Chimp Haven, a recently established nonprofit sanctuary for chimpanzees retired from laboratory studies. Bourgeois also won an Andrew Memorial Award last year.

Sarringhaus, an anthropology and zoology double major, was awarded $800 for a study on bone asymmetry in the Hamann-Todd great ape skeletal collection housed at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

The awards were established by the family and friends of Rebecca Andrew, who died in 1995 in the French Alps while attending Miami’s Luxembourg campus. More than $15,000 has been presented for primatology research by Miami undergraduates since the award’s inception in 1996.
