164th commencement Saturday
Miami will award 3,320 degrees at its 164th annual spring commencement ceremony Saturday, May 3, in Yager Stadium. President James C. Garland will preside.
Andy Rooney, CBS News correspondent, will present the commencement address and will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters.
The Benjamin Harrison Medallion, Miami’s most prestigious faculty/staff award, will be presented to a member of the faculty or staff who has national stature in an academic discipline or an administrative area.
Music will be presented by Miami’s symphony orchestra, under the direction of Brandon Jones (Miami ’98). Michael Newman, a vocal performance major from Lebanon, will lead singing of the national anthem and the alma mater.
The total number of diplomas includes 162 associate’s, 2,929 bachelor’s, 215 master’s and 14 doctorates.
Students who will fulfill graduation requirements in the summer and have elected to walk through the May commencement ceremony include 356 bachelor’s and 22 associate’s degree candidates. A separate ceremony will be held in August for master’s and doctoral degree recipients.
Recognition ceremonies for each college and school will be held Saturday and Sunday.
