Kevin Powell to speak on state of hip-hop

Writer, commentator and hip-hop historian Kevin Powell will speak on "The State of Hip-Hop Culture" at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in the great room of MacMillan Hall. His talk is sponsored by Miami’s Black Student Action Association.

Called "one of America’s most brilliant young cultural critics," Powell, formerly a senior writer for Vibe, has written for publications including Newsweek, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, Black American and Essence.

Powell was a cast member on the first season of MTV’s popular series "The Real World."

Powell is author or editor of five books including Who’s Gonna Take the Weight?: Manhood, Race and Power in America.

A reception follows the talk, which is free and open to the public.
