This letter is an appeal to all my colleagues who live in and around Oxford. Very soon we will be voting on several bond issues. One of these bond issues will provide funds to build a new elementary school in the Talawanda school district. A new school is desperately needed because our current elementary schools are overcrowded, and many teachers and students are forced into unacceptable learning environments.
This bond issue does not require that the new school be built in Oxford or on Kehr Road, as some argue, but only that money will be provided for the construction of a new facility. While I urge you to vote yes on this issue, my plea to you is that you vote! In last year’s vote on the then proposed bond issue, the voter turn out from Oxford residents was embarrassingly low. Many Miami faculty and staff have moved away from Oxford or chosen to live elsewhere because they are not confident in the Talawanda district’s ability to provide a quality education for their children. This leaves a void in the Oxford community that affects everyone living here. How can the Miami community, an institution of higher learning with major influence in the city and school district, allow this situation to deteriorate? Please vote in the upcoming election, especially if you live in Oxford.
