Over-the-Rhine photographer to speak during Miami’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Jimmy Heath, photographer and activist from Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, will present a slide show and lecture, "Art and Social Change," at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Leonard Theatre in Peabody Hall.

Heath’s photo exhibition of Over-the-Rhine, "Broken City," will be on display Nov. 14-23 at the Peabody Hall Gallery. The gallery is open to the public 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Heath, formerly homeless, is director of the Center for Community Photography at Peaslee Neighborhood Center, where he runs the Literacy Through Photography children’s program. He is editor of "Streetvibes," a forum for homeless, civil rights and human rights issues, and serves as a board member for several nonprofit organizations.

Heath’s visit is part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, coordinated by Miami’s Social Action Center. Other events include:

• Writers Harvest, readings from members of the English department, 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in 120 Hughes. All donations received will go to the Cincinnati Freestore Foodbank and Shared Harvest Foodbank in Hamilton.

• Pledge-a-Meal, Nov. 20. Students sign up to donate one meal from their meal plan. Last year more than 830 students pledged their meal, raising $2,500 for local charities.

• "Shantytown," at the Shriver Center patio Thursday, Nov. 20, and at the Phi Delta Gates at the end of Slant Walk Nov. 21 through 23. Students will sleep in cardboard box "houses" to raise awareness of homelessness.

Hunger Awareness Week events are sponsored by the Social Action Center, office of service learning and leadership, School of Interdisciplinary Studies, Center for American and World Cultures, the black world studies program, the Etheridge Center for Reflective Leadership, the English department, Miami University libraries and many student organizations.
