Guidelines for Submissions to Commentary

The following guidelines are proposed for submissions to commentary. The guidelines in 1-4 and 6-7 are those which have been in place since the creation of this section of The Report.

Number 5 is a new proposal to facilitate the interchange of ideas and information. If you have comments or suggestions, please contact the Commentary editor, Bill Houk, at or 9-5637.

1. Commentary provides university faculty and staff an opportunity to express their opinions in The Miami University Report. Contributions may deal with any topic likely to be of concern to the university community.

2. Submissions to Commentary should be between 500 and 600 words in length.
Each Report publication reserves space for the Commentary section for submissions of this length. If submissions are longer than this, they will be returned to the author(s) for editing. If the piece cannot be edited to this length, Commentary will print the first 600 words of a submission with a reference to a Web site where the entire article can be read by interested parties. Alternatively, authors who wish to do so may submit a brief abstract of their article (no longer than 200 words) with a reference to an appropriate Web site for the full article.

3. Each submission must indicate the person(s) or group responsible for the article.
Anonymous contributions will not be published. Submissions from academic or staff units must indicate either the names of the contributors in that unit or that the article has been approved by that unit for publication. The responsibility for statements made in any article rests with the submitter.

4. Due to limitations of both space and frequency of publication, Commentary will print only one submission per person or group on a given topic.

5. In order to allow as much interchange as possible, a maximum of two submissions per semester during the academic year and one submission during the summer per person or group will be accepted.

6. Deadline for submission of articles is 5 p.m. Friday.
This deadline is necessary in order to provide time for editing, when necessary, and for composition of The Report.

7. Articles will be published on a first-come first-served and space-available basis.
Submission of articles by the Friday deadline does not guarantee that the article will be published in the next available Report. At times, depending on space available and the length of submissions, more than one article may published. The shorter the articles, the more rapidly will be the turnover. The Commentary editor will endeavor to expedite publication whenever possible. If submissions are time sensitive, they must be submitted early enough to appear in order. Please contact the Commentary editor if you have problems in this area.
