Don Daiker co-edits book assessing writing instruction
Donald Daiker (English) is the co-editor of a collection of 24 essays assessing and challenging the state of writing instruction.
Composition Studies in the New Millennium: Rereading the Past, Rewriting the Future, published by Southern Illinois University Press, came out of a national conference of writing program administrators held at Miami in 2001.
It charts new directions in the theory and practice of teaching writing, according to the book’s editors, Lynn Z. Bloom of the University of Connecticut, Edward M. White of the University of Arizona, and Daiker. They also co-edited an earlier companion volume, Composition in the Twenty-First Century: Crisis and Change (1996).
Daiker, the founding director of Miami’s first-in-the-nation portfolio writing assessment program, was named Outstanding College Educator of 2003 by the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts. His other books include Sentence Combining: A Rhetorical Perspective(1985), The Writing Teacher as Researcher (1990) and New Directions in Portfolio Assessment (1994).
