Miami recycling honored by EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Miami’s recycling program for creating a waste reduction campaign that extends beyond campus borders.

Miami received one of 36 WasteWise honorable mention awards given nationwide to companies, municipalities and schools. Miami was one of five universities recognized for waste reduction efforts.

WasteWise is a free, voluntary EPA program helping U.S. organizations eliminate municipal solid waste, benefiting the bottom line and the environment.

In addition to other awards, WasteWise recognized the honorable mention winners for “noteworthy accomplishments in waste prevention, recycling collection, and buying or manufacturing recycled-content products in 2002.”

In the past year, Miami has recycled more than 2,200 tons of material, thus eliminating their transport to a landfill, and built a larger materials recovery facility to accommodate the substantial amount of recyclable materials, says Marcy Bauer, environmental education coordinator.

Three of the five universities recognized by the EPA are from Ohio: The other two are Youngstown State and Ohio universities.
