Welkener wins bright idea award

Michele Welkener, coordinator of living learning community programs, has received a Bright Idea Recognition Award from the POD (Professional Organizational Development) Network in Higher Education, a professional organization dedicated to enhancing learning and teaching.

All of Miami’s residence halls are living learning communities: programs that integrate curricular with co-curricular experiences to complement and extend classroom learning.

Welkener, whose bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees are from Miami, won the award while she was assistant director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Indiana State University. Her idea was titled “Advancing a New Vision: Designing a Professional Development Program for Teaching/Graduate Assistants from Academic and Student Affairs.” In uniting teaching assistants from academic departments and graduate assistants from student affairs “it is our hope that the multiple perspectives on educational issues arising from conversations between these audiences will enrich their understanding and experience, thus improving their educational practice,” says Welkener.

She hopes to foster a similar collaborative approach to educational practice at Miami. “I am excited about the promise Miami’s living learning communities hold for promoting students’ holistic growth and fostering a spirit of collaboration across campus.”

POD has nearly 1,200 members: faculty, administrators, consultants and others. The POD Network and its members lead and support change for the improvement of higher education.
