Director named for new journalism program
Richard Campbell has been named the first director of Miami’s new journalism program. Campbell is former director of the school of journalism at Middle Tennessee State University. He was one of four candidates interviewed by faculty, staff and students in January.
Miami will begin offering a journalism major next fall. The free-standing program will feature a liberal arts approach to integrated journalism (print, broadcast and Web), focusing on proficiency in critical thinking, writing, reporting and editing. A second major will be required of all journalism majors.
Currently, interested students declare an English major with a journalism concentration.
Campbell has been a professor of journalism at MTSU since 1997. Until 2003 he directed the program, which had more than 650 majors with sequences in journalism, public relations, advertising and graphics/media design. Before that he taught in the communication department at the University of Michigan and spent one year in the university’s Michigan Project on Persuasive Media. From 1982-87 Campbell taught English at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, where he initiated a mass communication program for the English department.
Campbell is the author of three books on news coverage and mass communication, as well as numerous articles. He is on the editorial board of Television Quarterly.
He will begin in the position July 1.
