MacMillan Hall dedication April 1
The world premiere of "myaamionki?i iiyaayaani (I Am Going to the Place of the Miamis)" will be performed during the MacMillan Hall dedication at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 1. The piece, commissioned by the Center for American and World Cultures and composed by Glen Roger Davis (music), is dedicated to the Miami Tribe.
Written for mixed choir, pow wow drum, flute and Indian shaker, the piece will be sung in the Miami language by the Collegiate Chorale, with spoken text by Daryl Baldwin, director of the Myaamia Project. They will be joined by Sandra Seefeld (music), flute, and percussion major John Marque, pow wow drum.
In preparation for composing "myaamionki?i iiyaayaani," Davis attended a pow wow with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and transcribed pieces of Miami music. He worked with Baldwin to assure that the style was culturally appropriate – for instance having male singers lead with female singers following.
The chorale, Ethan Sperry (music), director, will also perform selections of music from America, Australia and Brazil at the dedication. "Myaamionki?i iiyaayaani" will be performed by the chorale during its tour of Cuba in May.
Dedication events, including a reception and informational slide show, will be held in the lobby and the Great Room of MacMillan.
It is free and open to the public.
