Miami to host conference on French comics Nov. 11-12
“History and Politics in French-Language Comics” is the focus of an international conference at Miami Nov. 11-12. The featured speaker will be noted French cartoonist Baru at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12. in MacMillan Hall's Great Room.
Baru is one of the best-known French cartoonists publishing today, according to conference organizer Mark McKinney (French and Italian). Baru has won major prizes, including two best comic book of the year awards. His work was published in translation in Raw, a groundbreaking New York comics journal that has now-mythical status, according to McKinney. The journal is edited by Art Spiegelman and his French wife, Francoise Mouly (art editor for The New Yorker).
Guest scholars from here and abroad will discuss bande dessinée (French-language comic strips) as they relate to history, World War II, colonialism and other topics.
In conjunction with the conference a display of French and American comics is planned in the foyer of King Library throughout November.
The conference is sponsored by the L.P. Irvin Fund of the department of French and Italian, College of Arts and Science, departments of English and history and the international studies program.
