Mozart's 'Le Nozze di Figaro' Nov. 12, 13 and 14
Miami Opera Theatre will perform Mozart's “Le Nozze di Figaro” (“The Marriage of Figaro”) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, in Hall Auditorium. The production is a joint presentation of the Miami University Performing Arts Series and the department of music.
The production will be sung in Italian with English surcaps.
Melanie Woodruff will sing the role of Susanna and Ryan Wells will portray Figaro. Other leads in the opera, all voice majors, are Calesta Day, a first-year graduate student from Dayton as Countess Almaviva, and Nicolae Pop, a second-year graduate student as Count Almaviva. Pop is a native of Romania who lives in Cincinnati.
“Figaro” was popular from its first performance in 1786; at the second performance, one duet had to be sung three times. The audience clamored for so many repetitions that it led Emperor Joseph II to ban all encores. The classic comedy, considered by many to be “the perfect opera,” explores the delicate nature of fidelity and trust. The action is set in a Spanish castle on a single day.
Sally Stunkel is guest director of the production and Ricardo Averbach is musical director and conductor. Sets were designed by Geoffrey Ahlers. Mari Opatz-Muni is artistic director of Miami Opera Theatre.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students and youth.
