Nego Gato Music and Dance Ensemble to perform Nov. 19

The Nego Gato Music and Dance Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in Hall Auditorium, part of the Miami University Performing Arts Series.

The company is led by founder Jose Sena, known professionally as Nego Gato (Black Cat). For more than 20 years, the ensemble has celebrated Afro-Brazilian folkloric music and dance traditions in energetic and engaging performances throughout the United States. Dance forms include the spiritual Candomble, the acrobatic martial dances of Maculele and Capoeira and the exhilarating Samba.

Sena will present several free performances as part of a residency in Oxford:

• Capoeira workshop, 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in Lower Alexander dining hall on the Western campus;

• Ethnomusicology workshop and presentation, 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Great Room at MacMillan Hall, followed by refreshments; and

• Pre-performance talk, 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the art museum.

Nego Gato's appearance at Miami is sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures and President James and Carole Garland. Support also is provided by the Ohio Arts Council and Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour.
