Award of excellence for OPC
Miami's Outdoor Pursuit Center (OPC) received the David J. Webb Program Excellence Award at the International Conference on Outdoor Recreation and Education Oct. 31.
The annual award, presented by the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education, honors an outstanding nonprofit outdoor program that has provided dynamic and innovative services to its participants, demonstrated professionalism and high standards of conduct and contributed to the outdoor community at large by sharing information and assisting other programs. The conference was held at Montgomery Bell State Resort Park and Conference Center in Tennessee.
Miami was recognized as the program of excellence for 2004 for service to the Miami and Oxford community; dedication and service to the association and the field of outdoor recreation; development of innovative programs, facilities and services; and willingness to share knowledge and concepts with other programs.
The OPC is part of Miami's recreational sports center, which is celebrating its 10th year of operation in 2005. The OPC has an indoor climbing wall, ropes course, and retail and rental operations. It also sponsors outdoor trips, nationally and internationally.
Accepting the award were Mark Freidline, OPC director; Bryan Ng and Christie Harrison, assistant directors; and the following student staff and alumni: Kobi Platt '01, interdisciplinary studies; Sarah Ruzic '04, English/literature; Betsy Booher '04, psychology; Chad Weis '05, systems analysis; Laura Snyder '05, English/creative writing; and Maureen Harter '07, interdisciplinary studies.
