Sobel chairs international software engineering committee

Ann Sobel (computer science and systems analysis) is co-chair of the Software Engineering 2004 Steering Committee. This is an international effort composed of representatives from the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers Computer Society (IEEE-CS) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) as well as the Information Processing Society of Japan, the British Computer Society and the Australian Computer Society. Sobel also acted as the Knowledge Area Chair, leading the effort to identify those topics that every software engineering graduate should know.

To respond to the growth of software engineering undergraduate programs in the United States and other countries, this group had two goals: to construct a Software Engineering Education Knowledge model describing content and to develop a curriculum for SE programs. The effort resulted in the first curriculum guideline for SE, published recently under the title Software Engineering 2004: Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Software Engineering. A copy of this publication is available at This is one volume in the series of computing curriculum recommendations that have been endorsed by the IEEE-CS/ACM. The effort was funded by the National Science Foundation, the IEEE-CS and the ACM.
