Miami's student counseling service reaccredited by two national agencies
Miami's student counseling service has recently been reaccredited by two national organizations, the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), which evaluates and accredits services, and the American Psychological Association (APA), which evaluates and accredits training programs.
“These reaccreditations provide important and highly valued confirmation to our consumers - clients and trainees alike - that the services and training we provide are of the highest quality,” said Kip Alishio, director of the student counseling service.
The IACS praised the counseling service for its effective and comprehensive program, saying it makes a “vital contribution” to the quality of student and campus life.
Among the achievements cited:
• experienced and talented professional staff;
• flexibility and ingenuity in meeting student needs;
• state of the art facility;
• innovative consultation and outreach activities;
• diverse staff widely recognized for their advocacy for multiculturalism.
Approval by the APA means that Miami's student counseling program will be listed annually among accredited programs of professional psychology in the American Psychologist.
The APA committee on accreditation cited the office's comprehensive and thorough training program for interns, specifically mentioning successful efforts to recruit and retain a diverse staff. Comments also praised the sense of mutual respect between staff and interns, with service provided by the interns described as “highly valued.”
Both accrediting agencies awarded the maximum allowable number of years before the next review.
“The reaccreditations provide a very appreciated boost to the morale of our staff who are deeply committed to providing quality service to meet what continue to be unprecedented increases in demand for mental health services, here and on campuses across the country,” Alishio said.
