Hiestand exhibition features competition finalists
Works by 10 finalists in the sixth annual Miami University Young Painters Competition for the William and Dorothy Yeck Award are being exhibited at the Hiestand Galleries, School of Fine Arts, through Feb. 11.
William (Miami '36) and Dorothy Yeck of Dayton established the competition to recognize artists ages 25-35 and create a collection of works at Miami to better understand 21st century art trends. The winner receives a $10,000 purchase award. Additional prizes are given for second place, $1,500, and third, $1,000. Non-representational works were solicited this year.
Juror for the competition is Lauri Firstenberg, assistant director and curator of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles. She will give a lecture at Miami on Jan. 20.
Winners will be announced at a reception, 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21.
Works by Daniel Dove, 2004 Yeck Award recipient, will be exhibited through Jan. 28 at the Hiestand as well. Dove is assistant professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He received an MFA from Yale University in 1996. Dove will visit campus in January, date to be announced.
Hiestand hours are 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The galleries will be closed Dec. 22-Jan. 2. Admission is free. For more information, call 9-1883.
