Recreational sports center 10 years old

Miami's recreational sports center (RSC) marks its 10th year of operation with a variety of activities.

The center, which won awards for its design, is a much-used resource by students, staff and community members and is a popular spot for university tours. The RSC has had 42,000 different people purchase memberships since it opened in fall 1994, and 6 million participations from members and instructional program patrons. Two million visitors have toured the spacious concourse, fitness center, natatorium and other features of the RSC.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, throughout spring semester the RSC will post displays of construction of the building, former staffers, a donor recognition list, Top 10 lists by program area, and other items that mark the center's growth.

The major celebration will be a member cookout in early April. Recognition of 10-year members and other programs are also planned, says Jim Kraus, director of special events at services at the RSC.

Rec sports employs 48 full-time staff, three graduate students and 398 undergraduate students. It has hosted regional and national events in swimming, diving and wall climbing. In 2003-2004 the RSC received a 95 percent satisfaction rate on customer service.

Some more numbers:

• Current membership is 1,450 faculty/staff and 550 community members. All students can use the RSC.

• The outdoor pursuit center (OPC), which plans many adventure trips during the year, has guided 150 students on international trips over the last five years.

• A ballroom dance class brought in 87 people its first year - the most ever for a group fitness workshop.

• Intramural sports, which organizes about two dozen different sports plus tournaments, had 135 flag football teams in 1998-99.

Until the recreational sports center was built, Miami used Withrow Court (built in 1931) and Phillips Hall (1962) for indoor sports/recreational use. The two facilities were meant to accommodate a student population of 7,500.
