Miami theatre production selected for festival

The Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) has selected the theatre department's production of “Bourbon at the Border” for performance at a regional festival in Normal, Ill., on Jan. 14.

The production was chosen out of 54 others in the Great Lakes region, which includes Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

“Bourbon at the Border,” directed by Paul K. Jackson, was presented at Miami Oct. 27-31. It shows the effects of Freedom Summer 1964 on the lives of two volunteers who participated.

The entire production will travel to the festival. Regional winners will perform at the national festival in Washington, D.C., in April.

Other awards announced include:

• “Duel,” a one-act play by Ted Brengle (second-year English graduate student), selected for a reading on Jan. 13. Only six one acts were chosen. In “Duel,” a woman on the eve of her engagement explores her past, her present and her future with the one person who knows her better than anyone else and remembers a broken promise that she can never forgive - and perhaps shouldn't.

• “In Quest of Love,” nominated for the ACTF David Mark Cohen National Playwriting Award for the translation performed at Miami by Howard Blanning and Jinbae Park. The play was performed Oct. 6-10 and directed by Blanning.
