Door-to-Door: Are we there yet?
Miami's Nighttime Door-to-Door van service is providing better and faster service to students than ever before, say university officials.
Statistics for fall semester show that average completion time (defined as the time of the call for an escort to the drop-off notification by the van driver) is just over 13 minutes. More than 85 percent of callers for Miami's nighttime van service are dropped off at their requested locations within 20 minutes and 96 percent are dropped off within 30 minutes.
Students now can talk directly to the van driver via cell phone and get instantaneous information as to when the van is coming to pick them up, says Perry Gordon, assistant director of parking and transportation services.
The biggest misperception among students is the amount of time they need to wait for a ride. Last semester only four students had to wait 40 minutes or longer.
Gordon anticipates that winter weather will bring an upswing in Door-to-Door usage. However, overall usage has been down from past years despite improved service. He attributes the downturn to more students driving on campus in the evening and more evening usage of the Miami Metro buses.
Both the Door-to-Door service and Miami Metro are free to students.
Metro buses run until 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
Nighttime Door-to-Door provides escorts within the campus or to and from off-campus locations (but not from off-campus to off-campus) from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday through Sunday.
Priority is given to those traveling alone.
