Kathleen M. Hladky, a first-year graduate student in comparative religion, will receive the Myrtis H. Powell Scholarship. Hladky (Miami '04) has been involved in organizations including the Comparative Religion Students Association, Alpha Phi Omega (a national service fraternity) and served as co-chair of Awareness Week. As president of Spectrum, she led in creating dialogue and building communities and coalitions across campus.
The scholarship is given in honor of Myrtis H. Powell, vice president for student affairs at Miami from 1989 to 2002.
The Jennie Elder Suel Outstanding Woman of Color Award will go to Susan Mosley-Howard, associate vice president and dean of students, and Ruchelle Dunwoody, director of intramural club sports and summer camps.
Mosley-Howard has been a consistent advocate for students by providing leadership on curriculum development and fostering a climate of respect and diversity. She served as school board president of the Northwest Local School District near Cincinnati and has served on the Butler County Assault Prevention Committee and Blue Ribbon Commission of the Hamilton City School District. She is the director of professional development and continuing education for the National Association of Black Psychologists. Dunwoody's philosophy involves working with as many people as possible to unite Miami's campus. Her goal is to assist first-year students with feeling comfortable and welcome. She has served as secretary of the Association of Black Faculty and Staff and is a member of several university committees. She volunteers with the Borderline Volleyball team, an Oxford Youth Club team and is chairperson of the Volleyball Committee for the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association.
