Miami again wins RecycleMania

Competing in the largest university recycling contest ever, Miami students bested 48 schools across the United States to win RecycleMania 2005, its third win in the five years that the contest has been held.

Miami upset the University of Oregon by recycling 66.19 pounds of recyclables per on-campus student. U. of Oregon removed 65.10 pounds per student from its waste stream. Third through fifth places went to Bowling Green State, Oregon State and Ohio universities, with 55.77, 53.29 and 50.8 pounds per student respectively.

Residence hall students participating in RecycleMania competition collect glass, cans, all types of paper, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic. By winning two years consecutively, Miami holds on to Recycle Dude, the RecycleMania Per Capita Classic trophy.

The competition expanded in 2004, when RecycleMania partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise program. In 2004 RecycleMania won the National Recycling Coalition's Outstanding Recycling Innovation Award.

A new competition was added this year: California State University San Marcos won the Recycling Rate contest by posting an overall on-campus recycling rate (recycling weight per weight of trash) of nearly 44 percent.

The EPA says participating schools recycled more than 10.4 million pounds of materials, which is approximately equivalent to removing 3,484 passenger cars from the road for one year (based on carbon dioxide equivalents - CO2E - annually emitted per car) or preserving 132 acres of forest from deforestation.

In Miami's on-campus competition, McKee Hall beat the next closest residence hall by more than 20 pounds per student. Second-through-fifth places went, in order, to Bishop, McBride, Clawson and Wells halls.

The Butler County Commissioners have issued a proclamation naming May 15, 2005, as “Miami University RecycleMania Day” in honor of Miami's repeat victory.
