Three students, three alums awarded Fulbrights

Three Miami students have been awarded Fulbright grants for pre-doctoral graduate study and research abroad in 2005-2006.
The students, who graduated in May, are among the more than 1,000 U.S. students to travel abroad next year through the Fulbright program. They are:

Yana Pleshivoy, speech pathology and audiology, Herzen State Pedagogical University, St. Petersburg, “The Russian System of Speech Pathology: A Multicultural Approach”;

Michael Seifried, philosophy, Arnold Schoenberg Center, Vienna, “The Ethical Aesthete: A Philosophical Approach to Arnold Schoenberg's Music”; and

Marianne Windholtz, economics, University of Munich, “The Economic Progression of Modern German Agribusiness.”

Three Miami alumni have also been awarded Fulbright grants:

Lana Alman (2004), Universidad de Chile in Santiago, Chile;

Heather Ann Bayless (2003), South Korea's Kookmin University; and

Benjamin Johnson (2003), Pontifica Universidad Javeriana, Bogota, Colombia.

Of seven Miami applicants this year, six received Fulbright grants, “an extraordinary feat,” said David Keitges, director of international education and campus Fulbright adviser. “At Miami we clearly have the potential to send large numbers of our graduating students abroad for Fulbright-funded study and research.”

The students were assisted by Roscoe Ward (paper and chemical engineering) and Keitges. Bayless was assisted by Susan Ewing (art).

The competition for 2006-2007 is now open, with applications due at the office of international education Oct. 3.
