Winners in Yeck Competition
Marie Sivak of Wilsonville, Ore., received first place in the Miami University Young Sculptors Competition and is recipient of the $10,000 William (Miami '36) and Dorothy Yeck purchase award.
Winners were announced at a reception and awards ceremony held Sept. 16 at the Hiestand Galleries, School of Fine Arts.
Sivak's sculpture, “Merche's Pieta” (2004), of carved alabaster, red cloth and steel, now becomes part of Miami's Best Young Sculptors of the Twenty-First Century Collection.
Sivak is a Cleveland native who is currently an artist-in-residence at the Berllanderi Sculpture Workshop in Wales, U.K. She received a master's of fine arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and a bachelor's from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She teaches sculpture at Portland Community College in Oregon.
Michael LaForte of Brooklyn, N.Y., was named second-place winner for his work, “Time Switch,” and received $1,500. Third-place winner and recipient of $1,000 was Jerod C. Christy of Carbondale, Ill., for “Push Broom.”
Works by finalists in the competition will be on exhibit at the Hiestand Galleries through Oct. 16. Juror for the national competition was Judith Russi Kirshner, dean of the College of Architecture and Art at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
