Exhibition by art chair Oct. 31-Nov. 22
An exhibition by the new chair of Miami's art department, dele jegede, opens Oct. 31 at the Hiestand Galleries, School of Fine Arts. The exhibition is titled “fARTilizer.” An opening reception is 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Hiestand. The reception is free and open to the public.
A painter, historian, teacher and scholar, jegede earned a doctorate in art history from Indiana University, Bloomington. He obtained his first degree in fine art from the Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria.
Since the '70s, jegede has taught in different environments in the United States and abroad. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Spellman College, director of the Center for Cultural Studies at the University of Lagos, served as president of the Society of Nigerian Artists, was a senior postdoctoral fellow at the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution, was president of the Arts Council of the African Studies Association, and served as professor and chair of the department of art at Indiana State University.
As an art historian, his research focuses on contemporary and popular arts of Africa, with an emphasis on the city of Lagos, Nigeria. As a painter, he draws on elements of both African and Western cultures.
