Concert to feature Russian music, showcase art and poetry

Barbara and Gerhardt Suhrstedt will perform Russian music at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in Souers Recital Hall, Center for Performing Arts. The event, “Slava: The Glory of the Arts in Tsarist Russia,” presents piano duet music, art and poetry within the context of historical events of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Music of Glinka, Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff will be featured; paintings by Perov, Repin and Kustodiev; and the poetry of Pushkin, Nekrasov and Akhmatova. The poems will be read by members of the Miami University Russian Club.

The Suhrstedts are one of America's few touring one-piano, four-hand teams. Since their 1982 New York debut, they have performed in 40 states, Canada and Russia. They live in Boston. The couple also will perform as part of Midday Music in Oxford at noon Oct. 26 at the Oxford Presbyterian Church.

The Suhrstedts' Souers recital is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Miami's Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies and by the department of German, Russian and East Asian languages. For more information, call the Havighurst Center at 9-3303.
