Reiss receives Ohioana Award for poetry
James Reiss (English) was among the award winners recognized by the Ohioana Library Association at ceremonies held Oct. 22 in Columbus. Reiss received the Ohioana Helen and Laura Krout Memorial Poetry Award.
Reiss, who served as editor of the Miami University Press from 1992 to 2003, is the author of six books of poetry: Greatest Hits: 1970-2005, Riff on Six: New and Selected Poems, Ten Thousand Good Mornings, The Parable of Fire, Express and The Breathers.
Additionally, his poems have appeared in such places as The Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, The Hudson Review, The Kenyon Review, The Nation, The New Republic, The New Yorker, Poetry and Slate.
Reiss, who joined Miami's faculty in 1965, has won two Academy of American Poets first prizes, the Poetry Center Discovery Award and fellowships from Breadloaf, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council.
The Ohioana Library Association's mission is to recognize and encourage the creative accomplishments of Ohioans; preserve and expand a permanent collection of books, sheet music, manuscripts and other materials by Ohioans and about Ohio; and disseminate information about the work of Ohio writers, musicians and other artists to researchers, schools and the general public.
