Holiday concerts celebrate season
December concerts at Miami feature diverse musical styles and groups small and large. All the events listed are free and open to the public, with tickets required only for the Dec. 2 and 3 Miami Choraliers and Collegiate Chorale performances as seating is limited..
• Miami Choraliers and Collegiate Chorale at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3, in Kumler Chapel. The concert includes a performance by candlelight of Benjamin Britten's “A Ceremony of Carols,” a holiday tradition in Oxford. Dan Manning (music) will conduct.
• Oxford String Trio at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Souers Recital Hall, Center for Performing Arts. Members, all Miami music faculty, are Harvey Thurmer, violin; Mary E.M. Harris, viola; and Pansy Chang, cello. The program includes trios by Beethoven and Dohnanyi.
• Miami Men's Glee Club and Miami University Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Hall Auditorium. The program includes rarely heard pieces for male chorus and orchestra, including Vaughan Williams' “Fantasia on Christmas Carols.” Also featured will be Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and music from the movie “The Hunt for Red October.” Ricardo Averbach conducts the orchestra; Ethan Sperry is director of the glee club.
• Miami Wind Ensemble and Chamber Singers at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in Hall Auditorium. William Bausano is director of the Chamber Singers; Gary A. Speck is director of the wind ensemble. The program includes a set of sacred motets, in Latin, by four Italian composers from the early Baroque era.
