Philip and Elaina Hampton funds awarded to seven
Seven Miami faculty have been awarded grants from the Philip and Elaina Hampton Fund for Faculty International Initiatives for projects to be completed by June 2007.
The recipients, their projects and the amount of their awards follow:
William Albin, Ricardo Averbach, G. Roger Davis, music, “World Music, American Popular Music, and Western Art Music Hybrids: Preserving the Past, Creating the Future,” $6,400;
Hailiang Dong, geology, “Ocean Drilling Program in the South China Sea: A Unique Opportunity for Studying Biogeochemical Cycling of Carbon in Oceans,” $4,500;
Benjamin Hamilton, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, “Research Collaboration on New Alloy Development and Characterization,” $3,450;
Karla Mallette, French and Italian, “European National Identity and Mediterranean Modernity,” $2,800;
Mark McKinney, French and Italian, “Memories of French Colonialism in Comics and Graphic Novels,” $2,000;
Paula Saine, teacher education, “Using Literacy Travel Bags to Promote Reading: Latrikunda Lower Basic School,” $3,000.
Hampton reading committee members for the fall 2005 competition were: Gerardo Brown-Manrique (architecture and interior design); Michael Vanni (zoology); Roscoe Ward (paper science); James Sheehan (teacher education); Carl Paternite (psychology); and David Keitges (international education), chair.
