Commencement ceremonies Dec. 16

Miami will award 874 diplomas at its fall commencement ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in Millett Hall, with President James Garland presiding.

Student speaker will be Diana Buchanan from the Graduate School. Marcus Shore (Miami '79), president of the Miami University Alumni Association, will present brief remarks.

Winners of the E. Phillips Knox Teaching Award, given annually to faculty who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching at the undergraduate level, will be announced. The university's first Distinguished Service Award will also be presented. The award, the most significant recognition that Miami has to offer for service to the university by faculty, staff and/or administrators, was established in April by University Senate.

Organist Roderick E. Nimtz, assistant executive director at Miami Middletown, will present the music.

Conferral of diplomas will include 60 associate's, 662 bachelor's, 129 master's, 18 doctorates and five certificates.
