Architecture students sweep metal design awards
Miami architecture students took first, second and honorable mention awards in a national design competition sponsored by the Metal Construction Association (MCA).
The competition challenged students to design an outdoor band/performance pavilion using metal for a specific site in Washington Park, part of the Chicago Park District.
Mark Cerny and Taryn Nye, both seniors sponsored by Murali Paranandi (architecture and interior design), were named first-place winners. Graduate students Matt Honegger and Dustin Weida took second place. They were sponsored by Manole Voroneanu and Christie Laingor (both architecture and interior design). Christopher Jones, a senior also sponsored by Paranandi, received honorable mention.
As first-place winners, Cerny and Nye received a $2,000 cash prize, plus $1,000 for the department and $500 for the faculty sponsor. Honegger and Weida received $1,000, with $500 for the department and $250 for the sponsor.
MCA sponsors the awards to help architectural students and to promote educational programs that develop knowledge of the wide range of durable and energy efficient metal construction projects. The program also is funded by the American Iron and Steel Institute.
