Steel Band concerts celebrate release of new CD
Spring concerts by the Miami University Steel Band will mark the official release of the band's new compact disc, “Simple Pleasures.”
The concerts are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1, in Hall Auditorium. Featured will be special guest artist Tom Miller, steel pan. Miller's company, Pan Ramajay Productions, produced “Simple Pleasures,” the third CD for the Miami ensemble, directed by Chris Tanner.
Miller is one of the most significant composers of steel band music today and appears widely in performances across the country. The concerts will feature several of his compositions and arrangements. Miller also will work with the steel band in a three-day residency.
The band will perform a transcription from Trinidad's Panorama steel band competition. The piece, “Dis Feelin' Nice,” was the winning composition in the 1987 Panorama competition. “It's a 10-minute composition filled with exciting and difficult music,” says Tanner. “It is a real pleasure to see the Miami students, most of whom have only been playing pan for two to three years, perform such a challenging piece so well.”
Miller's company distributes the Miami Steel Band's CDs nationwide via a Web site, www.ramajay.com. The band's music also is available via iTunes. More than 3,000 of the group's previous CDs have been sold.
