Grandparents of the Year named

Green Tea Day is sponsored by the departments of sociology and gerontology and of physical education, health and sport studies, the women's center, the Havighurst Center, the Coalition for a Healthy Community, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Harney & Sons Tea.

Six people have been named Grandparents of the Year for 2006 at Miami and will be recognized at an awards ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at the Marcum Conference Center.

The awards ceremony is part of Green Tea Day and will be preceded by a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at 4:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.

Grandparents of the Year are:

• Virgene Peterson of Wilmington, grandmother of Curt Bradshaw, freshman middle childhood education major;

• John D'Apolito of Poland, grandfather of Anne-Marie Turner, junior middle childhood education major;

• Faith and Jerry Krebs of Getzville, N.Y., grandparents of Rebecca Brown, junior health studies major; and

• Margaret and Len Szczepanski of Northfield, honorary grandparents of Katharine Schweitzer, senior philosophy major.

This is the fifth year for the award, sponsored by Miami's Scripps Gerontology Center and the Knolls of Oxford. Awardees were selected based on student essays describing the inspirational influence of their grandparents on their lives.
